Covid Hotel

The second life of a big hotel turned hospital

On March 18th, the Winter Garden, a four-star hotel just a short walk from Bergamo airport, made its facilities available to Covid-19 patients discharged from hospitals, but still positive and waiting to return to their homes with the absolute certainty of not representing a potential danger to their families.

The initiative is the result of the joint effort of the Foundation ‘Insieme con Humanitas’ and the association OSA, Operatori Sanitari Associati, which provide the health personnel. The hotel hosts almost one hundred patients, who spend an average of two weeks here, waiting for the results of the swabs to be negative. Patients enjoy free use of the hotel’s starred kitchen and continue their rehabilitation, both physical and psychological, thanks to daily physiotherapy sessions and conversations with psychoanalysts through tablets.

The Winter Garden was the first hotel in Italy to decide to open its doors to Covid patients: a model of collaboration between the tourism and healthcare sectors, soon replicated both in the province of Bergamo (Italy’s hardest hit by the epidemic) and in other regions. An extraordinary example of versatility and solidarity, crucial to alleviate the burden on hospitals, and above all to minimize the further spread of contagion among the families of discharged patients.
