On November 25th, 2020, El Pibe de Oro, “The Golden Boy,” as Diego Armando Maradona was known, died.
This sudden loss – he had just turned 60 – is upsetting for the whole world. Argentina has declared three days of national mourning, and the mayor of Naples has decided to rename the city’s football stadium, San Paolo, in his honour. Maradona has always been an idol here in Naples, especially since that magical year – 1987 – when he helped the Napoli team win the Italian league championship for the first time. Ever since then, the city has identified with him:
Diego is still alive in the streets of the centre, in its squares, in the murals where he is still the star, and in the bars where we keep his memory alive.
Here in Naples Maradona has become a secular religion, and today he is remembered as an immortal legend.
