In Touba, a man sells prayer cards with the portrait of Amadou Bamba, the most influential spiritual Sufi leader in Senegal. Serigne Touba, as Bamba is also called, preached that the Greater Jihad is a war against the enemies and demons within, which everyone must wage with himself to fulfill the will of God. His teachings rule out any form of violence, even against the vilest creature. Only one photograph of Amadou Bamba survived. The reproductions of the white shape and the face of the saint can be seen on countless street corners, on many amulets and on stickers on taxis and buses.
