Sicily, Italy. Baron Gaetano Martinez Tagliavia, a former diplomat, and his son Nino in the sixteenth-century Palazzo Mango in Palermo. He served as Italian Vice-Consul in Split and Italian Ambassador to Eritrea. The origins of the Martinez Tagliavia family and its history are closely linked to Sicilian history and the dominions that followed one another on the island: from the Arabs and the Normans to the Swabians, to the Crown of Aragon and from the Spanish to the Bourbons. In the building, which survived the bombings of the Second World War that devastated Palermo, a restoration of the ancient structures and original spaces is underway. In addition to having allocated a wing of the building for guest accommodation, the estate produces wine and high quality extra virgin olive oil.
