Sicily, Italy. Gioacchino Lanza Tomasi, heir to the author of T”he Leopard”, with his wife Nicoletta. In his hand is a copy of the first edition of “The Leopard”. Gioacchino Lanza Tomasi, a former superintendent of the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples and famous musicologist, is considered one the greatest scholars of operatic theatre and the evolution of melodrama in contemporary theatre. He promoted the spread of new trends in contemporary musical theatre by collaborating with artists such as Arnaldo Pomodoro and Michelangelo Pistoletto. The Tomasi di Lampedusa family is a branch of the Tomasi family from which the Leopardis of Recanati are also descended and apparently has Byzantine origins.
