“To be doing good deeds is man’s most glorious task” wrote Sophocles two and a half thousand years ago.
The coronavirus pandemic is putting the entire global system in great difficulty. Alongside the obvious health emergency, a ‘social bomb’ is also quickly ticking away. The thousands of families who were already struggling to make it to the end of the month have now been joined by many others, including those with family members who’ve only temporarily lost their jobs. In a serious situation such as this, volunteers play a vital role in helping to alleviate the difficulties faced by the population.
From volunteers assisting the ambulance service, to those offering to go and buy medicines and food for those in quarantine. From the humanitarian organisations collecting food for the needy, to volunteers providing assistance to the homeless, through to those who decide to produce home-made masks for people who aren’t able to find them. The world of volunteering is full of stories of both the young and old who have chosen to help their fellow humans during this critical period for humankind.
