The Strait for Unesco?

Calabria and Sicily joined by the Strait of Messina

For once we do not speak about the elusive bridge – mysterious and imaginary – which should link the two cities, but rather about the breaking idea of nominating the entire area between the main Southernmost regions of Italy, to the World Heritage Sites list of the Unesco. The official request will be made by the main municipalities facing the two sides of the strait, eventually and hopefully overcoming old rivalries to transform the entire area into a natural, historical and archaeological wonder to be defended and promoted in a common way. “Straits are shortcuts that the seas have invented to reduce time of meeting ,” wrote Francesco Merlo , noting how “Messina and Reggio are just one big city divided by a small patch of sea .” Single city that today could become a very peculiar Unesco heritage site.
