Montenegro. People place a “badnjak” on the fire. The badnjak, also known as veseljak, literally means “the one who brings joy” in Serbian, and is a tree branch or young tree brought into the house and placed on the fire on Christmas Eve, a central tradition in Orthodox Christmas celebrations. The felling, preparation, entrance into the house, and placing on the fire, are surrounded by elaborate rituals. In Podgorica this celebration takes place in a little garden of an ancient church at the edge of the Gorica hills.
