Kazakhstan. In response to the Chernobyl nuclear accident, the Soviet Union sent soldiers from all over the country to work on containing the fallout. Sixty thousand soldiers were sent from Kazakhstan and Soviet Kaisanov was one of them. He worked in Chernobyl for 83 days in 1986. Soviet is therefore a double victim of radiation, not only from Chernobyl but also because he was living in the district of Zharma, close to the test site during the period in which it was active. He later suffered a heart attack and he is now recognized by the Kazakhstan State as an invalid because of his exposure to radiation in Chernobyl, not Semipalatinsk.
