YOUNG | The Oman of Tomorrow
In 1970, Oman began its reform journey toward modernity. Fifty years later, the Arab nation is a stable, wealthy and developed country where 65 percent of the population is under 25 years old. Who are the young Omani people, the true drivers of change? What are they thinking and what are they dreaming of?
Telling the country from their point of view: this was the challenge issued by Visit Oman – Oman Ministry of Tourism on the occasion of the Sultanate’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
Four young Italian photography talents were chosen to carry out the project on the new Omani generation: two Parallelozero contributors, Vanessa Vettorello and Serena Vittorini, and two former participants in our Fellowship, Umberto Coa and Nicolò Panzeri.
The Parallelozero Fellowship is a training initiative that each year accompanies new photojournalism talent on a path of professional growth.
An unprecedented portrait of a nation balanced between tradition and the future
The photographers traveled throughout the Arab country in search of the stories and places that better describe the new local generation – their contemporaries – through four narrative lines: the creative and digitized youth of Muscat, women at work, young people in rural areas, and the lives of successful sportsmen and women and tourism workers.
In addition to having found wide coverage in the pages of Italian and international newspapers – Internazionale, D – la Repubblica, National Geographic Traveller UK – and having become a dedicated portal, Young Oman is also a phygital project, with a photo exhibition.
Set up in February 2020 in the Sala delle Colonne within the vast complex of Milan’s Fabbrica del Vapore, the exhibition was part of the Sultanate of Oman’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
Young Oman was an ambitious challenge that allowed us – through the eyes of photography – to discover and tell the world about the dreams and ambitions of young Omani people.
